The 2016 edition of the Flora Bama Polar Bear Dip started off like the last several years, cold and grey weather met the brave souls that made their way to the Flora Bama to dip into the Gulf of Mexico. The one minor difference was that this years extremely warm weather has kept the Gulf waters very close to 70 degrees. With the air temps sitting in the mid 40’s at Dip time (along with brisk north wind) The Gulf of Mexico was the warmest place to be.
Pat Mclellan and John McInnis were the handling countdown duties this year and as you can see from the video the crowd held on until the countdown was finished. Revelers or “dippers” came in all shapes and sizes this year. The Polar Bears seemed to be the winner in the Costume category with the Plungerheads coming up a close second. The Flora Bama Polar Bear Dip has been an annual event since the 1980’s and just seems to get bigger and bigger every year. The Flora Bama is located in Perdido Key FL and is situated right on the Florida-Alabama border. It was originally opened as a local place to purchase beer on Sundays when the State of Alabama banned Sunday alcohol sales. Over the years it has morphed into the monstrosity it is today. You can always find Live Music and the adult beverage of your choice.
